Notes on the methods used

The following notes provide more detailed information on the methodological approach used in presenting data on this website. DFG profile: Research areas

DFG awards of an HEI for 2017 to 2019 are shown according to their distribution by DFG research area on a regionally proportional basis in the form of a Voronoi diagram. The research areas are grouped according to scientific disciplines. This is not shown for HEIs with a total of less than €1 million in DFG awards for the period under review. For further information on DFG awards, see the Glossary of Methodological Terms under “DFG funding”.

HEI views

Higher education institutions (HEIs) are shown with their own HEI view if they meet at least two of the following criteria:

• At least €1 million in DFG awards from 2017 to 2019
• At least €2 million in direct R&D project funding from the federal government for 2017 to 2019
• At least €2 million in funding under the Horizon 2020 – EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation 2014 to 2019 (converted to a three-year period for comparison purposes) as of 12 May 2020
• At least five visiting fellowships for foreign researchers funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation from 2015 to 2019
• At least five visiting fellowships for foreign researchers funded by the German Academic Exchange Service from 2015 to 2019

The calculation is based on

• DFG awards from 2017 to 2019,
• R&D project funding provided directly by the federal government from 2017 to 2019,
• Funding under the Horizon 2020 – EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation from 2014 to 2019 (converted to a three-year period for comparison purposes) as of 12 May 2020

at HEIs and non-university institutions in Germany. The regional classification is based on the spatial planning regions of the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR; www.bbsr.bund.de). Regions with a total award or funding volume of €10 million or more are reported individually. Individual amounts in a subject area/funding area or programme area are shown from an amount of €0.1 million. Individual amounts of a funding provider under the map topic “DFG, federal government and EU overall” are shown from an amount of €10 million.
