Third-party funding, especially from the DFG, is a popular indicator for assessing the quality of research. The projects concerned go through a rigorous, multi-stage review process before being approved, so they reflect the quality of both the idea and the environment. While the amount of funds raised also correlates with the size of the higher education institution (HEI), the differentiated breakdown in the Funding Atlas shows which HEIs were successful in establishing priority areas in individual subjects.
