Germany’s research landscape

HEIs, regions and federal states

Individual HEIs have a defining impact on their region as well as their federal state. The Funding Atlas 2021 shows which priority areas are located where in Germany.

Research in Germany is as diverse as science itself. The Funding Atlas 2021 uses an interactive web map and individual university views to show the priority areas pursued by German higher education institutions (HEIs) and what the subjects of research are in the various regions and federal states.

The Funding Atlas has provided detailed profiles of German universities and regions since 2006. Since 2015, it has also shown individual DFG profile views for a total of almost 100 HEIs (see the section “HEI views”). These show the volume of DFG awards granted to German HEIs by scientific discipline and research area.

The interactive map offers an individual view of the research profile of the various federal states and regions. You can create your personal view of research funding in Germany for five third-party funding topics.

Take a look to find out which subject and funding areas are priorities at which HEIs and in which regions or federal states!
